The Philadelphia Phillies have quietly made several strategic moves across their organization recently, including within their minor league system and major league roster.
One such move involved adding Brewer Hicklen, previously with the Detroit Tigers, to their 40-man roster. Though Hicklen showed some promise in Triple-A Toledo, at 29 years old, he has limited MLB experience—just 10 games in total, including one this season.
As the Phillies gear up for the postseason, every roster spot becomes crucial. On Tuesday, they designated Hicklen for assignment, effectively ending his time with the team. To fill the gap, the Phillies promoted Rafael Lantigua to the active roster following the injury to Edmundo Sosa (groin).
CBS Sports noted that Hicklen spent most of the season in Triple-A, serving as organizational depth with a .224/.319/.409 slash line over 386 plate appearances.
With the playoffs on the horizon, the Phillies may make more roster adjustments as needed. With their championship aspirations high, the organization is prepared to make tough decisions to optimize their roster for the postseason run.
