Rangers Reportedly Targeting Major Offseason Signing to Bolster First Base and Power Lineup

The Texas Rangers are still clinging to Wild Card hopes late in the season, but with the playoffs likely out of reach, the team may already be shifting focus to offseason moves aimed at building a championship-caliber roster.

According to FanSided’s Jake Elman, the Rangers could be in line for a major acquisition this winter: New York Mets slugger and five-time All-Star Pete Alonso. Elman suggests that Texas, which successfully lured Jacob deGrom from the Mets, could try to do the same with Alonso.

“The Rangers already took deGrom from the Mets, so why not go after Alonso too?” Elman wrote. “Texas has committed to spending and winning in recent years — which paid off with a 2023 World Series title — and other teams around the league could take notes.”

Alonso is putting up big numbers this season, with a .270 average, .344 on-base percentage, .520 slugging, 36 home runs, and 119 RBIs — a significant upgrade over current Rangers first baseman Jake Burger, who has a .243 average and 16 home runs.

Adding Alonso would inject serious power into a lineup currently lacking a dominant slugger — no player on the roster has hit more than 21 home runs. As a potential cleanup hitter, Alonso could dramatically boost the Rangers’ offense and help them return to serious postseason contention.

If Texas decides to pursue him, Alonso could be the piece that turns them from playoff hopefuls into World Series threats once again.
