The Texas Rangers’ hopes of making a late run for an American League wild-card spot have taken another hit with the loss of star second baseman Marcus Semien, who was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Friday. The foot injury is expected to sideline Semien for four to six weeks, likely ending his regular season.
He joins outfielder Evan Carter, who also went on the 10-day IL on Friday with a fractured right wrist — an injury that will probably keep him out for the rest of the year.
Semien explained that he’s dealing with a sprain to the third metatarsal in his foot, along with a Lisfranc ligament sprain. The injury is a tough blow for a Rangers team sitting 4.5 games behind in the AL wild-card race, especially after just sweeping the Cleveland Guardians in a key three-game series.
Semien has been remarkably durable during his time in Texas, playing at least 159 games each season over the past three years and leading the team in appearances since his arrival.
On a positive note, outfielder Adolis Garcia has returned from the 10-day IL after recovering from a left ankle sprain.
