Rangers Hit Hard as Longtime Ironman Infielder Lands on Injured List for Only Second Time in Career, Leaving Big Gap in Lineup

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have placed second baseman Marcus Semien on the 10-day injured list with a left foot contusion, marking only the second time in his 13-year MLB career he’s been sidelined due to injury. In the same move, the team activated right fielder Adolis García from the IL.

Semien sustained the injury during Thursday’s 6-4 loss to the Royals in Kansas City, after fouling a ball off his foot in the first inning. He’s currently wearing a walking boot, and the team has yet to determine the full extent of the injury.

García rejoined the team Saturday, the first day he was eligible to return from a left ankle sprain. He had taken live batting practice Friday ahead of Texas’ 4-3 win over Cleveland and was back in the lineup for Game 2 of the series.

Prior to this injury, Semien had been one of the Rangers’ most dependable players, missing only six of the team’s 615 games since signing a seven-year, $175 million deal before the 2022 season. His only previous IL stint came in early 2017 with the Oakland Athletics, when he missed nearly three months with a wrist injury.

“He’s going to be grouchy, I can tell you that,” said manager Bruce Bochy. “He prides himself on being out there every day. So if he’s saying it might take some time, you know it’s serious.”

Semien’s injury came in the same game where outfielder Evan Carter was also hurt, suffering a fractured right wrist after being hit by a pitch. Carter was placed on the IL Friday and may miss the rest of the season.
