Rangers Face Significant Lineup Shake-Up as Key Starter Heads to Injured List with Foot Contusion, While Veteran Outfielder Makes Timely Return from Ankle Sprain

The Texas Rangers made two major roster moves ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the Cleveland Guardians at Globe Life Field. Second baseman Marcus Semien has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left foot contusion, while outfielder Adolis García has returned from the IL after recovering from a left ankle sprain, according to Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports.

Semien suffered the injury Thursday against the Kansas City Royals after fouling a pitch off his foot in the first inning. He exited the game in the third. Although scans (X-ray, MRI, CT) revealed no fractures, Semien remains in a walking boot and is dealing with ongoing pain. He’s scheduled to visit a foot specialist for further evaluation.

Manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged Semien’s frustration: “He’s going to be grouchy, I can tell you that. He sees himself as a guy who should be out there every day. So if he’s saying it might take a while, you know it’s serious.”

This marks just the second IL stint in Semien’s 13-year MLB career—the first since a 2017 wrist injury with the Athletics. Since joining the Rangers in 2022 on a seven-year, $175 million contract, he’s been one of baseball’s most reliable players, missing only six of the team’s 615 games before this injury. In 2025, Semien has played 127 of 130 games, hitting .230 with 15 home runs and 62 RBIs. He leads the team in several categories since signing with Texas, including games played, hits, walks, and total bases. Rookie Cody Freeman will start at second base on Saturday in his place.

On a brighter note, Adolis García is back in action. He was activated Saturday, the first day he was eligible after a 10-day IL stint (Aug. 13–22) for an ankle sprain. He participated in live batting practice Friday and did not need a rehab assignment.

In 116 games this season, García is batting .224 with 16 home runs, 64 RBIs, and 24 doubles. He leads the Rangers in doubles, RBIs, and extra-base hits (40). This marks his first time on the injured list since 2020.

The Rangers are also dealing with the loss of outfielder Evan Carter, who broke his right wrist in the same game that Semien was injured. He’s now on the IL and could be out for the rest of the season.

Following these changes, the Rangers’ 40-man roster remains full, with Cody Bradford, Tyler Mahle, and Josh Sborz still on the 60-day IL.
