The Cincinnati Reds made a late push before the trade deadline, acquiring utility player Miguel Andujar from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league right-hander Kenya Huggins.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Reds also transferred veteran pitcher Wade Miley to the 60-day injured list.
Andujar, 30, has primarily played third base this season but brings defensive flexibility, having also seen time in left field, right field, and at first base. He’s currently enjoying a career-best season at the plate, batting .298 with six home runs and 27 RBIs — the third-highest average among Oakland’s regulars.
Known for his ability to crush left-handed pitching, Andujar is hitting .422 with a 1.036 OPS against southpaws this year. Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall praised the acquisition, stating, “He fits as a middle-of-the-order bat against lefties. He’s got some power.”
Andujar, in his ninth MLB season, has previously played for the Yankees and Pirates and owns a .277 career batting average.
The Athletics receive righty Kenya Huggins, Cincinnati’s No. 22-ranked prospect. A 22-year-old former fourth-round pick, Huggins has posted a 3.69 ERA with 57 strikeouts over 63 1/3 innings in 18 games (15 starts) this season for Single-A Daytona.
Meanwhile, Wade Miley’s move to the 60-day IL comes as he continues to rehab a left forearm flexor strain suffered in June. The 38-year-old has only pitched three games for Cincinnati this year and remains weeks away from returning. Across his 15-year MLB career, Miley holds a 109-99 record with a 4.09 ERA.
