Rangers Manager Optimistic as Injured Slugger Nears Return from Rehab Assignment
Texas Rangers designated hitter Joc Pederson is currently on a rehab stint with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, and there’s growing optimism he could rejoin the major league club as early as next week during their West Coast road trip to face the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners.
Pederson, who has been out since May 25 with a fractured right hand after being hit by a pitch the day prior, began his rehab assignment earlier this week in Omaha. He made his first live game appearance on Thursday, serving as designated hitter and impressing with a 2-for-3 outing that included two doubles, a walk, and a run scored. On Friday, he shifted to first base but went 0-for-3 in a rain-shortened five-inning game.
Despite a difficult season at the plate prior to his injury—hitting just .131 with two homers and six RBIs over 46 games—manager Bruce Bochy expressed hope Pederson is trending in the right direction. Bochy confirmed that he watched each of Pederson’s at-bats and said, “He’s doing well,” leaving the door open for his return next week.
Pederson’s recovery timeline was initially set at four to six weeks, and his recent progress suggests he’s staying on track. His return could add another boost to a Rangers offense that has surged since June 1, ranking fifth in MLB in total runs scored. If he can rediscover his form, it would provide a welcome lift as the Rangers push to stay in playoff contention.
