Injury Crisis Reaches Breaking Point: Cincinnati Hit by Catching Catastrophe, Forced to Make Emergency Trade to Stop the Bleeding

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired catcher Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees following yet another injury setback at the position — Gary Sánchez has become the fourth Orioles catcher to land on the injured list. Sánchez exited Saturday night’s game against the Braves with a sprained right knee, and no timeline has been given for his return, according to interim manager Tony Mansolino.

To complete the trade, Baltimore sent the Yankees international signing bonus slot money and either a player to be named later or cash. The Orioles are currently dealing with a string of injuries, with 14 players now sidelined.

All-Star Adley Rutschman has been out since June 19 due to a left oblique strain, Maverick Handley has remained on the concussion IL since a home plate collision on June 22, and Chadwick Tromp is nursing a lower back issue from June 30. Jacob Stallings, recently called up from Triple-A Norfolk, stepped in for Sánchez during Saturday’s 10-inning win over the Braves and will now share catching duties with newcomer Jackson.
