Two-Time Gold Glove Catcher Announces Retirement After 12 MLB Seasons

Veteran catcher Tucker Barnhart, known for his time with the Cincinnati Reds, has officially retired from Major League Baseball after a 12-year career, per MLB insider Robert Murray. Barnhart, a two-time Gold Glove winner with the Reds, also spent time with the Cubs, Tigers, Diamondbacks, and most recently, the Rangers, appearing in eight games for Texas this season.

Although some around the league believe Barnhart could transition into a managerial role in the future, it’s uncertain if he has interest in that path. Earlier this year, he was designated for assignment by the Rangers and sent to Triple-A Round Rock.

Over his career, Barnhart posted a .241 batting average with a .318 on-base percentage and .351 slugging percentage, hitting 53 home runs. He played 744 games with the Reds alone, hitting .248 with 261 RBIs during his time in Cincinnati. His lone postseason appearance came in 2020 with the Reds.

While not known for his offensive prowess, Barnhart’s defensive consistency and leadership behind the plate helped him carve out a respected MLB career. In total, he played 920 games—including 841 as a catcher—and also logged a handful of appearances at first base, third base, and even the outfield. He ends his career with a 6.9 WAR. With diminished production over the past few seasons, Barnhart decided the time was right to step away from the game.
