Cardinals Plot Ambitious Superstar Pursuit to Fill Championship Void, But Hopes of Landing Rival Outfielder Could Be Crushed by Harsh Market Realities

The St. Louis Cardinals may need to add a legitimate superstar if they want to be serious contenders for a World Series title in the near future. While their roster is talented, it lacks a true game-changer capable of dominating a playoff series. There’s still time to address this need, but the team could look to make a major move in the coming months.

Thomas Gauvain of Redbird Rants recently floated the idea of targeting Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker, either through a trade or by pursuing him in free agency. Gauvain pointed out that Tucker is expected to headline the 2025–2026 free agent class and could command a deal around $400 million. At 29 years old, Tucker would offer several years of prime performance and clearly fits the “superstar” profile. However, he also noted that the Cardinals would face stiff competition in free agency and that their best chance might come via trade—citing John Mozeliak’s past success in acquiring stars like Matt Holliday, Paul Goldschmidt, and Nolan Arenado.

Despite the speculation, the likelihood of the Cardinals landing Tucker is extremely low. First, it’s highly improbable that the Cubs would trade a star like Tucker to a division rival. Second, even in free agency, St. Louis would likely be outbid by deep-pocketed teams such as the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, or Dodgers. Realistically, the Cardinals’ chances of acquiring Tucker—either through trade or signing—are slim to none.
