Chicago’s Rebuild Gains More Firepower: Blackhawks Continue Smart Roster Reshaping, Securing Another High-Impact Player from Seattle in Latest Trade

On Saturday, the Chicago Blackhawks acquired forward Andre Burakovsky from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for forward Joe Veleno.

Additionally, Chicago placed defenseman T.J. Brodie on unconditional waivers with the intention of buying out his contract.

Burakovsky, 30, recorded 10 goals and 27 assists over 79 games with Seattle last season. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, having won with Washington in 2018 and Colorado in 2022. Over 11 NHL seasons and 696 regular-season games, he has accumulated 153 goals and 234 assists.

This trade adds size and scoring depth to the Blackhawks, while giving Seattle more salary cap flexibility.

Standing 6-foot-3, Burakovsky was originally drafted 23rd overall by Washington in 2013 and signed a five-year, $27.5 million deal with Seattle in July 2022.

Joe Veleno, 25, who was traded to Chicago from Detroit in March, tallied eight goals and nine assists in 74 games last season. The 6-foot-1 forward has a career total of 38 goals and 43 assists across 306 regular-season games. He carries a $2.275 million cap hit for the upcoming season, the final year of his contract.

Meanwhile, 35-year-old Brodie signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract with Chicago last summer and contributed two goals and eight assists in 54 games last season.
