Tyler Mahle was one of the biggest surprises for the Texas Rangers during the first half of the 2025 season. He didn’t just lead the team in pitching performance — he was among the league’s elite.

Although the rotation hasn’t struggled in his absence, Mahle’s pre-injury form could give the team a serious boost. With Nathan Eovaldi now out for the season, a spot in the rotation has opened up, and Mahle is expected to make his next appearance in the majors, according to the Rangers’ front office.

He’s been working his way back from a shoulder injury, recently pitching four strong innings in a Triple-A rehab start for Round Rock, throwing over 50 pitches.

Where does Mahle fit in the current pitching puzzle?
Jacob Latz has excelled this season and recently moved into the starting rotation. While there’s no official timeline for Mahle’s return or clarity on what role he’ll play, his previous position as a long reliever or bulk-inning option is currently vacant.

With the AL West heating up and the Rangers in a must-win stretch, the pressure is mounting. A healthy Mahle could provide crucial relief to a heavily used bullpen. As the pivotal Silver Boot series approaches — essentially a playoff play-in — every available arm counts.

When will he pitch next?
Mahle is likely to be activated for the upcoming series against the Miami Marlins — a team that’s been tougher than expected this season.

Pulling a red-hot Latz from the rotation seems unlikely. The most logical move would be slotting Mahle back into a familiar long relief role, which would also minimize disruption. Manager Bruce Bochy hasn’t made a final decision, but Mahle’s return could come at just the right time — or possibly, a bit too late.
