The Red Sox’s season took a turn back in June when standout prospect Roman Anthony was promoted from Triple-A Worcester. While several young players joined the roster, it was Anthony who made the biggest impact, providing a spark the team needed—especially after the controversial Rafael Devers trade, which ended up benefiting team chemistry.
Anthony’s energy and talent played a key role in Boston’s push toward the postseason. However, that momentum was interrupted when he suffered an oblique injury on September 2 during an at-bat against the Guardians. Since then, the Red Sox’s offense has noticeably dipped, though a thrilling 4-3 walk-off win over the Tigers on Friday officially punched their ticket to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
Anthony’s Injury Timeline: Return Still Unclear
Anthony’s oblique strain was expected to sideline him for 4-6 weeks. That means the earliest he could return is Tuesday, September 30—exactly four weeks since the injury. But it’s more likely he won’t be ready until closer to mid-October, possibly even after the team’s playoff run has ended.
Speaking to NESN after Friday’s game, Anthony remained focused on his recovery.
“I’m getting there,” he said. “Not looking too far ahead. Just taking it one day at a time, doing everything I can to get back as soon as possible.”
Grateful and Hopeful
Despite being sidelined, the 21-year-old is staying positive, soaking in the playoff atmosphere and holding out hope for a return. In just 71 games this season, Anthony posted an impressive 3.1 WAR—ranking sixth on the team despite playing less than half the season.
“It’s been amazing,” he said. “I’m incredibly thankful to be in this position, with this team and this city. The guys here are unbelievable. It’s been a great experience.”
Though he’s currently unable to contribute on the field, Anthony says he’s doing everything he can off it.
“It’s frustrating being injured, but I’m doing all I can to recover. Right now, I’m just trying to be the best teammate and support the guys however I can.”
Anthony’s Impact: A Winning Presence
The numbers show Anthony’s value—Boston went 44-27 in games he played this season, compared to a .500 record (44-45) without him.
As for his return goals?
“Just playing winning baseball,” he said. “If I do get back, I just want to help us win. I’m staying present, not worrying about the future, just focused on getting healthy and supporting the team.”
