Cincinnati Reds Make Late Deadline Splash, Acquiring Proven Power Bat to Strengthen Lineup Versatility and Fuel Second-Half Playoff Surge

In a final move just before the MLB trade deadline expired, the Cincinnati Reds made a noteworthy addition to their roster, acquiring veteran slugger Miguel Andújar from the Oakland Athletics. The deal, reported by team insider Charlie Goldsmith, adds an experienced and productive right-handed hitter to Cincinnati’s lineup as they chase a playoff spot in the second half of the season.

Andújar, who brings experience at both third base and left field, is particularly known for his success against left-handed pitching. In just 45 plate appearances this season versus lefties, he’s posted a staggering 1.036 OPS. He also maintained a .995 OPS in similar matchups last year, making him a natural platoon option to complement the Reds’ left-handed bats.

Originally debuting in 2017 with the New York Yankees, Andújar spent six seasons in the Bronx before short stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the A’s. Now 30, he arrives in Cincinnati with a career batting average of .277, including 437 hits, 206 RBIs, and 49 home runs. This season, he’s hitting .298 with 65 hits, 27 RBIs, and six homers.

Defensively, Andújar’s analytics aren’t glowing, but his offensive value, especially in matchup-specific roles, fills a key need for the Reds. His ability to contribute at multiple positions also gives the team more lineup flexibility moving forward.

Cincinnati currently holds a 57-52 record and sits third in the NL Central, behind both the Cubs and Brewers. While the division remains within reach, the Reds are also in the thick of the Wild Card race and are positioning themselves for a serious push.

With momentum on their side and a new weapon in Andújar, the Reds are looking to carry their winning record into August and beyond. Game 2 of their series against the Braves is set for August 1 at 12:40 p.m. ET.
