Texas Rangers Make Bold Roster Shake-Up, Sending Key Bullpen Contributor to Detroit Tigers in a Quiet Yet Potentially Game-Changing Deadline Deal

The Texas Rangers continued to reshape their pitching depth on Thursday, announcing the trade of right-handed reliever Codi Heuer to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash considerations.

Heuer, 28, made only one appearance for the Rangers in the 2025 season, tossing 1.1 innings on June 3. Though his time in Arlington was brief, the move signals the club’s intent to streamline its bullpen ahead of the final stretch of the season.

Originally acquired to provide middle relief support, Heuer never managed to secure a regular role in the Rangers’ bullpen due to both injury setbacks and strong competition from other relievers. He had been working his way back from previous arm issues, which likely limited his opportunities in a deep Texas staff.

For the Tigers, Heuer presents a low-risk, potentially high-reward option as they continue to explore ways to stabilize their own bullpen. With Detroit struggling to find consistency in relief, Heuer could get a fresh chance to prove himself in a more flexible role.

Following the trade, the Rangers now carry 39 players on their 40-man roster, which includes three currently on the 60-day injured list. This move also opens up space for Texas to remain active in the final hours before the MLB trade deadline.

The transaction may not generate headlines, but it’s part of the broader roster management strategy both clubs are deploying as they navigate the final two months of the regular season.
