Rangers Reinstate Jon Gray, Cut Ties with Reliever Luke Jackson in Roster Shake-Up
The Texas Rangers officially activated starting pitcher Jon Gray from the 60-day injured list on Wednesday, marking his return to the active roster for the first time this season. In a corresponding and somewhat unexpected move, the club designated veteran reliever Luke Jackson for assignment.
Gray, a key part of the Rangers’ 2023 World Series-winning rotation, had been sidelined since spring training after suffering a right forearm fracture from a comebacker. After completing a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock—where he threw 3.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out five—Gray was deemed ready to return.
The 32-year-old is in the final season of the four-year contract he signed prior to the 2022 campaign. Over three years with Texas, he has compiled a 21–21 record with a 4.16 ERA, making 72 starts and tallying 362 strikeouts in 387.1 innings.
To make room on the roster, the Rangers designated Luke Jackson, who had been an early-season bullpen standout after signing as a non-roster invitee in the offseason. Jackson opened 2025 as the team’s closer and recorded eight saves, but recent struggles and the emergence of Robert Garcia in the ninth inning led to his demotion.
Jackson finishes his stint—at least for now—with a 2–5 record, 4.11 ERA in 39 appearances. Texas now has seven days to trade him, outright him to the minors, or allow him to opt for free agency.
