New Arrival: Cincinnati Reds Make Big Midseason Move by Signing New Outfielder to Help Struggling Lineup

Underrated Rockies Outfielder Could Become a Priority Trade Target for the Reds

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Colorado Rockies will be in seller mode — and one of their more intriguing trade chips might be quietly gaining attention from Cincinnati.

Tyler Freeman, now with the Rockies after a spring trade from the Guardians, has emerged as a consistent offensive presence. Previously known for his contact-first approach and defensive flexibility, Freeman has taken off in Colorado, batting .316/.413/.421 this season. Since May 28, he’s been even better, slashing .363 while playing mostly in right field.

That could be especially appealing to the Reds, whose right fielders have combined for just a .212 average and a bottom-tier wRC+ of 61 in that same time frame. While Freeman alone won’t solve all of Cincinnati’s offensive issues, his bat and versatility could make a meaningful difference in their push for postseason contention.

Originally an infielder, Freeman transitioned to the outfield in 2023 and has since taken on a full-time role in the grass. The Guardians shipped him to Colorado in a deal for Nolan Jones, and it has so far proven beneficial for both organizations. However, with the Rockies headed for a historically poor season, they’re expected to offload assets like Freeman before the July 31 deadline — despite his club control through 2029.

For the Reds, acquiring Freeman could address multiple needs. Beyond solidifying right field, he could take over a utility role that’s currently being held by underperforming options like Rece Hinds or the injured Connor Joe. As Cincinnati regains momentum midseason, the front office may be ready to make a move to support another standout year from Elly De La Cruz. Targeting Freeman might be one of the smartest — and quietest — moves they can make.
