Blackhawks Add Promising Russian Goaltender in Strategic Move to Strengthen Long-Term Depth in Net

The Chicago Blackhawks have added another intriguing goalie prospect to their pipeline with the signing of Stanislav Berezhnoy. The 22-year-old netminder arrives from Russia, where he’s played mostly in the MHL and VHL, with just one KHL appearance to date.

Last season, Berezhnoy split time between Omskie Krylia and SKA-Neva St. Petersburg, putting up impressive stats in both stops. He posted a 0.926 save percentage and a 2.51 goals-against average (GAA) in 14 games with Omskie, and followed it up with a 0.931 save percentage, 2.49 GAA, and a shutout in 13 appearances for SKA-Neva. His postseason numbers were solid too, with a 0.921 save percentage and 2.66 GAA over eight games.

He’s expected to begin his North American career with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, and while the transition to a different style of play may take some time, Berezhnoy’s track record suggests he could adapt quickly.

Still, earning NHL time in Chicago won’t be easy. The Blackhawks have a crowded field of young goalies, with Spencer Knight looking like the go-to starter following last season’s trade acquisition. Knight played 38 games between the Panthers and Blackhawks, posting a 0.901 save percentage, a 2.72 GAA, and two shutouts. While his stats dipped slightly after the move to Chicago, he still showed promise with a 0.533 quality start percentage.

Arvid Soderblom also emerged as a key piece last season, showing major growth. His numbers — a 10-18-7 record, 0.898 save percentage, and 3.18 GAA — marked a significant step forward from the previous year. If he continues to develop, he’ll be a tough obstacle for Berezhnoy and other prospects trying to crack the NHL roster.

Still, with Berezhnoy’s consistent performances overseas and potential to grow, the Blackhawks may have added another quietly promising piece to their future goaltending plans.
