As the Trade Deadline Looms, Cardinals Could Be Forced to Part Ways With Star Third Baseman Amid AL Interest

Trade rumors surrounding Nolan Arenado continue to swirl, and one American League powerhouse—the New York Yankees—may be ready to revisit their interest ahead of the July 31 deadline. According to MLB.com’s Marc Feinsand, the Yankees are exploring upgrades at third base, and Arenado could emerge as a prime target, especially if the Cardinals stumble in July.

The Detroit Tigers have also reportedly shown interest in adding a veteran presence at third. However, Arenado’s no-trade clause means he must approve any potential move. While he turned down a trade to a contender previously, the right offer might sway him.

Although his offensive numbers have dipped this season (.247 average with 10 homers), Arenado’s elite defense and veteran experience still make him an attractive asset—despite the $74 million owed to him over the next three years. The Cardinals, currently holding a Wild Card spot, may hesitate to part with him unless their postseason hopes fade.
