What Looked Like a Season-Ending Blow Turns Out to Be a Painful Sprain as Guardians Await Recovery Timeline for Injured Starter

Guardians Avoid Major Setback as Gabriel Arias Diagnosed with Sprained Ankle After Scary Injury

During the third inning of Sunday’s matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Guardians infielder Gabriel Arias gave fans and teammates a real scare after suffering a painful-looking ankle injury while attempting a play. He remained on the ground for several minutes and was eventually carted off the field, raising fears of a possible fracture that could have ended his season.

Daniel Schneemann came in to replace him, and Arias was promptly taken for X-rays. Fortunately, those results came back negative, and the team later confirmed he sustained only a left ankle sprain. While the injury will likely sideline him for a few weeks, it’s far less severe than initially feared, and Arias is expected to return later this season—pending an official recovery timeline from the team.
